Speculative fiction, encompassing all supernatural, fantastical, and futuristic themes, including the main sub-genres of science fiction and fantasy (among others), is a spectacular genre for its versatile exploration of the human experience and its constantly crashing wave of challenge and its ripple effect of change to expand the frontiers of our imaginations—and trickle into our reality. In a world riddled with distractions, spec-fic/sci-fi/fantasy empower us to not only find the starting point, but also guide us on an incredible journey of an epic scale. The destination is outside of ourselves, and the journey tends to make us rethink the world, and mind, in which we live.
We can react to the unknown with fear (horror), be proactive with ingenuity to make it real in our technology (sci fi), treat the unknown as an adrenaline rush (superhero adventure) or absorb it with relishing zen, curiosity, or escapist freedom (fantasy).
We can look up and wonder not just who we are, but who we might become.
